Mark Richards, the four-times world champion and inventor of the revolutionary twin-fin board design, has been named the most influential Australian surfer in history.

  • 10 Bob McTavish
  • 9 Mark Occhilupo
  • 8 Wayne 'Rabbit' Bartholomew
  • 7 Layne Beachley
  • 6 Tom Carroll
  • 5 Bernard 'Midget' Farrelly
  • 4 Michael Petersen
  • 3 Robert 'Nat' Young
  • 2 Simon Anderson
  • 1 Mark Richards.

The Novocastrian's distinctive swooping style, earning him the affectionate nickname of 'The Wounded Seagull,' helped make him a competitive machine in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

His two-fin board design was used worldwide, his professionalism was legendary, his popularity was universal and he was regarded as an unreservedly worthy recipient of the highest accolade at Surfing Australia's lavish awards night in Sydney.

On recieving the honour, Richards was typically laid back. ""holy s---, it's a long time since I won anything."

Surfing Australia's decision to rank its ten most important surfers, to mark the 50-year anniversary of the governing body, was fraught with danger and possible controversy.

But the elevation of Richards above all others was greeted by a standing ovation.

The list was put together as part of the sports' anniversary celebrations in Australia and was well received on the night.

The compilation is expected to provoke much debate with some notable omissions including five-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore, two-time world titleholder Mick Fanning and Australia's first ever world champion Phyllis O'Donnell.

Gilmore and Joel Parkinson, who won his maiden world crown in 2012, were named Surfers of the Year at the function on Sydney's waterfront prior to the announcement of the Top 10.

"To win this award as the sport celebrates it's 50th anniversary is extra special," said Parkinson who thwarted Kelly Slater's bid for a 12th world title in December.

"I am truly honored. I would have been happy with a box of chocolates. "

ASP Men's World Junior Champion Jack Freestone won the Rising Star Award and 10-time Molokai paddleboard champion Jamie Mitchell from the Gold Coast the Waterman of the Year Award.
