AUSTRALIA'S Rugby League World Cup campaign has been thrown into turmoil, with superstar fullback Billy Slater attacked at a nightclub in Manchester.

Slater had been out drinking with teammates and was leaving the club around 3am when a fight broke out.

A police spokesman said: "One of the men threw a punch at the other, so the victim retaliated and punched him back in self-defence."

Australian team management said Slater now has the right to press charges.

"After reviewing CCTV footage of a scuffle outside a Manchester nightclub, police have determined that Slater was the victim who then acted in self-defence and has informed him of his right to press charges," a spokesman said.

"Billy was returning to the venue to collect his jacket that he left behind when he was attacked."

It is understood the doorman at the club recognised Slater as he returned for his jacket and started up a conversation, before another patron took offence to the line being held up and the drama erupted.

Police initially detained both men for several hours while they investigated the fight, and Slater still had not returned to the team hotel by morning.

The Kangaroos were on a night out after returning to their World Cup base in Manchester following their 50-0 win over Ireland in Limerick.

Team management said the players were free of official duties after returning from Ireland early Sunday morning.

But the incident is still an unwanted distraction, with Australia taking on the United States in Wales on Saturday in their knockout quarter final.

It's not the first incident to occur in Manchester on tour. Rookie Kangaroos forward Josh Papalii was robbed on Australia's first night in the United Kingdom.

It is understood Papalii was also returning home after a night out when he was fronted by a group demanding money.

But since then, the Kangaroos had a faultless build up to the quarter finals with three straight victories over England, Fiji and Ireland.

Australian team management said Slater was not injured in the fight.
