NORTH Melbourne retained its place in the top eight with a crushing 38-point win against West Coast at Patersons Stadium.

The Kangaroos breathed life into their faltering campaign with a second spirited victory in Perth this season, maintaining their perfect interstate record.

Brad Scott's men broke a five-game losing streak against the Eagles and North Melbourne will get its chance to further consolidate when it meets hapless Richmond at Etihad Stadium next Sunday night.

Powered by a dominant midfield, the Kangaroos held West Coast to just three goals after quarter-time.

The disappointing Eagles have sunk to 11th with a 4-6 record, and their finals hopes are on life support ahead of a clash with Hawthorn in Launceston on Saturday.

It took a goal after the final siren from Matt Priddis for the Eagles to avoid recording their lowest-ever score at Subiaco.

Forward Josh Kennedy was held goal-less after kicking 11 in West Coast's previous home game against Greater Western Sydney.

In worries for the Roos, small forward Lindsay Thomas was subbed out of the game in the third quarter with a hamstring problem and veteran Brent Harvey will sweat on the Match Review Panel's findings today.

Harvey and Adam Simpson played for North Melbourne together 256 times, but there was no favours from the new Eagles coach for his 1999 premiership teammate as Simpson coached against the Roos for the first time.

Tagger Scott Selwood kept Harvey on a tight leash early, holding the 36-year-old to just two touches in the opening quarter before Harvey lashed out at Selwood early in the second term.

Replays appeared to show Harvey connecting to Selwood's face with an open hand, in an incident sure to be scrutinised.

Harvey was suspended for the first six rounds of the 2013 season after being found guilty of striking Selwood's elder brother Adam and retired midfielder Daniel Kerr in the 2012 elimination final between the teams.

Harvey sprung to life with 10 touches in the second quarter and finished with 27 possessions, kicking a running goal from 50m to put the visitors 16 points in front 10 minutes into the second term.

The Kangaroos could have all but buried the Eagles before half-time, but missed a series of simple chances in front of goal, including close-range snaps from Harvey and Robin Nahas.

North still led by 20 points at the major break after holding West Coast to just one behind during the second term.

The Roos' advantage came despite losing the first-half inside 50 count and the Eagles dominating the centre clearances.

Priddis broke West Coast's goal drought in the opening minute of the third quarter to give the home side some hope, but it would be the only goal for the Eagles for the term as the Kangas quickly reasserted their authority.

Shaun Atley answered before Eagles defender Mitch Brown gave away a silly 50m penalty to allow Leigh Adams to covert from the goalsquare to extend the advantage to 26 points.

The match was effectively over early in time-on of the third when Drew Petrie nailed his spectacular banana goal, pushing North's lead beyond 40 points.
