Raiders tame Bulldogs in Goulburn

Five-eighth Josh McCrone steered Canberra to a 22-18 trial win over last year's NRL grand finalists Canterbury-Bankstown in Goulburn on Saturday night.

The five-tries-to-three victory was played in difficult conditions with strong winds and driving rain lashing the NSW Southern Tablelands.

Canberra rocketed home in the second half with 18 points in 16 minutes after trailing for most of the match.

The Bulldogs went into halftime leading 6-4 thanks to Sam Perrett's try, while Blake Ferguson opened Canberra's account after a kick from McCrone was batted back by winger Sandor Earl to the rangy centre in the 32nd minute.

The Bulldogs, who fielded a strong team including fullback Ben Barba, hooker and skipper Michael Ennis and five-eighth Josh Reynolds, were quick to get on the scoreboard in the second half when star centre Josh Morris crossed after just four minutes.

Morris got on the end of a Kris Keating kick and planted the ball, with Krisnan Inu converting from out wide to make it 12-4.

Ennis, Barba and Morris left the field in the 57th minute and the Raiders crashed over soon after as they went on a scoring rampage to grab a 22-12 lead.

A McCrone cross-field kick resulted in a try to Raiders speedster Dimitri Pelo before big forward Tom Learoyd-Lahrs powered over from close range to score a converted try to level the match at 12-12.

Earl and Jarrad Kennedy added tries for the Raiders with the Bulldogs scoring a consolation four-pointer through replacement fullback Drury Low in the dying minutes.

Impressive Roosters tame Tigers

Early crow ... the Roosters impress in their big trial win over the Tigers. Source:News Limited

Sydney Roosters rounded off an eventful NRL pre-season campaign with a 28-16 victory over Wests Tigers at a sodden Allianz Stadium on Saturday.

In a summer that has featured the arrival of Sonny Bill Williams, Michael Jennings, Luke O'Donnell, James Maloney and the appointment of new coach Trent Robinson, the Roosters go into the new campaign unbeaten after outscoring the Tigers by five tries to three to win the Foundation Cup.

The Roosters have a mouth-watering season opener against South Sydney on March 7 and will head into that game - where Williams will make his long-awaited debut - full of confidence.

Robinson's side opened the scoring after 17 minutes through exciting young back-rower Boyd Cordner who was picked out superbly by Mitchell Pearce and darted his way to the line.

The hosts were in again from their next attack when giant winger Daniel Tupou leapt above Matt Utai to haul in Maloney's crossfield kick.

The Tigers, who crushed Parramatta 41-4 in last Saturday's trial, responded well after a quiet start and were rewarded for some enterprising play when Benji Marshall scored a try on the stroke of halftime.

The Kiwi playmaker was picked out by Robbie Farah's perfectly-weighted grubber kick to dive forward and get his hand to the ball.

The second half saw both sides make a host of changes.

Tigers centre Chris Lawrence was forced off with a shoulder injury and Blake Ayshford went off with concussion after coming off second-best when tackling Aidan Guerra.

But it was the Roosters who looked the more likely to extend their lead after the break and Daniel Mortimer touched down under the posts following a break from Maloney.

Jennings added a fourth four-pointer when he showed his searing pace to latch onto Tupou's hopeful kick.

Roosters back-rower Guerra crashed over 12 minutes from time to ice the victory before the Tigers scored two late consolations through Joel Reddy and Matt Utai.

Maloney finished with three goals in what was an encouraging display from the former Warriors five-eighth, with Marshall kicking two.

Robinson, whose partner gave birth to their second child on Friday night, was satisfied with the performance.

However he was keen to point out the two wins his side recorded in successive weekends, after beating Manly last Friday, counted for little ahead of round one.

"I thought there was some good control in parts," Roosters coach Robinson said.

"The wins don't make a difference when it comes to round one but there's been parts of both trials where we've seen what we've wanted to see, both in attack and defence."

Tigers coach Mick Potter, who lost Braith Anasta and Tim Moltzen midway through the game due to gastro issues, said the display from his side showed they still had plenty of work ahead of them.

"At times there we couldn't go with them and it just shows we need to do a little bit extra at training," Potter said.

"Defensively we've got a little bit of work to do."

Lawrence (shoulder) and Ayshford (concussion) were both forced off but the Tigers' medical staff said they were not concerned.

WA on verge of stunning Shield win

Michael Hussey ... finds form for Western Australia. Source: Annaliese Frank / AAP

The quirky laws of cricket mean Western Australia and Tasmania will be back on Sunday morning at the WACA Ground, with the hosts needing six runs and the Tigers two wickets.

Despite the fact the Sheffield Shield game could very well be decided in an over, a result was not achieved with an extra half-hour taken at the end of the third day on Saturday.

The Warriors have done a brilliant job to be 8-351 and within striking distance of their third-best run-chase at the WACA after appearing out of the contest for much of the match.

WA were bowled out in their first innings for a paltry 97 with Tasmania making 211 and 242 either side of that to set the Warriors 357 to win.

That looked near impossible when WA slumped to 3-37 with Liam Davis (15), Marcus Harris (seven) and Luke Towers (five) all out, only for WA to start their resurgence.

Michael Hussey scored 44, his highest score since posting 115 not out in the first Test against Sri Lanka in December.

John Rogers added 39 and then Mitch Marsh continued his strong comeback from a hamstring injury with 51.

With the score 6-203, Sam Whiteman (83) and Ashton Agar (71 not out) then formed a partnership of 121 runs, the best stand of the bowler-dominated match.

WA coach Justin Langer was impressed with his side's fightback, and accepting of the sleepless night ahead.

"Mitchell Marsh, Sam Whiteman and Ashton Agar are only 20 or 21-year-old kids so I've been really thrilled with the way they have fought back,'' Langer said.

"There were a few people getting right into the game like we all were, but the fact is that is the rules of the game.

"I thought the umpires showed good commonsense to allow those eight overs to happen.

"I could jump up and down saying that of course we would like the game decided tonight, but that's the rules and we have to abide by them.''

Tasmania had still looked on top when Marsh was out with WA still needing a further 154 to win, but Whiteman and Agar swung the momentum again.

Whiteman eventually fell for a game-high 83 when caught by Alex Doolan off James Faulkner.

Agar was dropped by Ricky Ponting before he scored, but showed he could very well be a long-term all-rounder of considerable quality and not just a left-arm spinner.

Agar was joined by Burt Cockley (four not out) after Ryan Duffield was out for nine.

Faulkner took 4-65 for Tasmania and Ben Hilfenhaus 3-59.

Adding further spice to the result is the fact that the winner remains in contention to make next month's final and the loser is out of the race.

Cowboys thrashed by Titans

Playmaker ... Albert Kelly played a leading part in the Titans trial win. Source: Adam Head / News Limited

Missing Johnathan Thurston, North Queensland Cowboys were thrashed by an almost full strength Gold Coast Titans 28-10 in their NRL trial in Mackay on Saturday night.

Thurston will go into the 2013 NRL season with just one game under his belt after succumbing to the hand injury he suffered in the February 9 All Stars clash.

The Test pivot was named on an extended bench but North Queensland coach Neil Henry opted to hand Ray Thompson the No.6 jersey.

The Cowboys later dismissed fears that trump card Thurston was in danger of missing the NRL season opener against the Bulldogs in less than a fortnight.

While the Cowboys looked disjointed without their playmaker, the Titans boasted a near full strength line-up lacking just Queensland Origin backrower Ashley Harrison (broken nose) and hooker Beau Falloon (knee).

The Titans got off to a dream start in front of a heavily pro-Cowboys crowd after winger David Mead ran almost the length of the field to score an intercept try in the first five minutes.

The crowd were on their feet again when Titans recruit David Taylor nailed Cowboys forward Dallas Johnson with the now banned shoulder charge and North Queensland scored soon after the ensuing penalty through Ashton Sims.

Winger Kalifa Faifai Loa scored after great lead-up work by Brent Tate and Ash Graham to give the Cowboys a 10-6 lead at the break.

However, the Titans - led by impressive halfback hopeful Albert Kelly - hit back hard in the second half, running in four tries to one including three in the final 10 minutes.

Cowboys halfback Robert Lui also had his moments in a scrappy display from both teams.

Titans prop Luke Bailey was promoted to the starting line-up for the trial, marking his first appearance in Gold Coast colours since tearing an Achilles in round 23 last year.

Clarke, Ashwin dominate day one

Skipper ... Clarke led from the front for Australia again. Source:Fox Sports

Michael Clarke was given a reprieve by India's lack of faith in technology before reaching a magnificent century to lead Australia to 7-316 at stumps on day one of the first Test.

1st Test - MA Chidambaram Stadium

22 February 2013 - Day 1, Session 3

Australia 1st Innings

M. Clarke 103 169 11 1 60.95
P. Siddle 1 18 0 0 5.56
R. Jadeja 24 5 56 1 2.33

Clarke will resume on Saturday on 103 from 169 deliveries with 11 fours and one six.

The tourists - who chose to bat first in a crumbling, spinning pitch in Chennai - stumbled to 5-153 after lunch on Friday.

That was before debutant allrounder Moises Henriques played a mature hand of 68 and shared a 151-run stand with Clarke. Peter Siddle is one not out.

The day's pivotal incident came when Clarke was on 39 in the penultimate over before tea.

The right-hander appeared to give a bat-pad catch to short leg but the appeal from offspinner Ravi Ashwin (6-88) was turned down.

Relive all the action and follow day two with our Cricket Match Centre.

The short-sighted decision by the India board to oppose the use of the decision-review system (DRS) has already proved costly in this series.

It was Clarke's 23rd hundred and ninth in 22 matches as captain and came with a stylish four to long-off in the second-last ball before stumps.

"It was quite clear for me he hit the ball," Ashwin said.

Clarke was unavailable for comment after play but Henriques said the skipper realised after seeing a replay that he'd been a lucky man.

"It looked like it just glanced his thigh pad and went up. But then once I saw the big screen it was a slightly different opinion," Henriques said.

"We didn't really speak about it out in the middle but after he had a look at the replay at the tea break I think he realised he was a little bit lucky."

David Warner added 64 for the first wicket with Ed Cowan (29).

Ashwin threw Australia's middle order into disarray by removing Shane Watson lbw for 28 in the first over after the interval.

Ashwin trapped Warner (59) lbw in his next over and 12 runs later Matthew Wade (12) was Ashwin's third lbw victim at 5-153.

Clarke, who began the series seven runs behind Bradman's 6996 runs, became the 10th Australian player to reach the 7000-mark with a cut shot to the point boundary off the bowling of Harbhajan Singh.

Australia reached 5-215 at tea and Henriques was out in the 90th over with the total on 304, when he was Ashwin's fourth lbw victim. Mitchell Starc was bowled by left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja in the next over.

Australia attempted to put off-field security tensions to one side on Friday following twin bomb blasts in Hyderabad overnight which claimed the lives of at least 14 people.

The second Test starts in Hyderabad on March 2.

Ponting puts Tasmania in control

Still got it ... Ricky Ponting top-scored for Tasmania on day two. Source: Luke Bowden / News Limited

On another tricky day for batting, Ricky Ponting has steered Tasmania into a commanding position in the Sheffield Shield match against Western Australia at the WACA Ground.

SHEF - WACA Ground

21 February 2013 - Day 2, Session 3

Tasmania 2nd Innings

J. Krejza 23 47 2 1 48.94
A. Maher 1 4 0 0 25

At stumps on day two on Friday, the Tigers battled to 9-238 in their second innings to hold an overall lead of 352 runs after earlier rolling the Warriors for 97.

Ponting's 76 is the only half-century for the match on a day when 13 wickets fell on a lively WACA wicket as the visitors banked a 114-run first-innings lead.

The Tigers remain a chance to make the Shield final if they take the full six points on offer and that is what continues to drive Ponting for the rest of this season.

"If there was anything that was overly full or short I needed to capitalise on it because if you let the bowlers dictate to you then they are always a chance of knocking you over," Ponting said.

"There's a bit to play for for the team and I love coming back playing for Tassie, and love playing finals.

"We played two finals last year and weren't quite good enough to get across the line so my focus is to play as well as I can to give this team the best chance of making a Shield final."

Jon Wells contributed 43 and Alex Doolan 33 as the Tigers capitalised following WA's dismal batting display.

The Warriors had crumbled to 6-54 at stumps on the first day and then only managed another 43 to start day two.

Luke Butterworth was the star with the ball for Tasmania taking 5-35 but all of the Tigers' quicks performed well.

Adam Maher claimed 2-16, Ben Hilfenhaus 2-27 and James Faulkner 1-16 while offspinner Jason Krejza wasn't even required to send down a ball.

Even though Tasmania slipped to 2-10 with openers Ben Dunk (eight) and Mark Cosgrove (one) out cheaply, Doolan and Ponting then put on 92 in what is the biggest partnership of the match to date.

Ponting looked on track for his 80th first-class century before mishitting a pull shot off Ryan Duffield (4-71).
George Bailey then fell soon after for 13 but an unbeaten 23 from Krejza settled the Tigers.

'I argued with an Indian elephant'

Test Match ... Media restrictions force creative coverage. Source: Sam Ruttyn / News Limited

There a few things you need to know about India.

1. It smells
2. It's hot
3. It smells

I have had the pleasure of travelling India as both a cricketer and as a tourist. I can tell you now, travelling there as a cricketer is a far different experience.

As a cricketer, you get to travel in style, five-star hotels are the norm, business class air travel (most of the time, I will touch on this down the track - but not as far down the track as Eddie Cowan) and locals wanting to carry your bags in return for "one snap".

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

Get Adobe Flash Player

"One snap" is a request for a photo and it was requested of Glenn McGrath and the other international players during my stay as a Delhi Daredevil.

When I was requested for "one snap", it was to take the "one snap" of the requester and Mr McGrath.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

Get Adobe Flash Player

"Mr Physiotherapist, can you please take a snap of me and Mr McGrath?".

I only complained once and this was when Virender Sehwag asked that I take "one snap" of himself and Mr McGrath. "Oi, you, take one snap of me and Mr McGrath, then I see you for massage of Virender's feet". Oh boy. Sad but true.

As a tourist, you get asked for "no snaps" and are met with no fan fare. You will inevitably swallow some tap water along the way and as far as a weight loss program goes, I can highly recommend it.

Forget drinking shakes and running and other stuff associated to weight loss; buy a return ticket to India once a year, drink the tap water and head home.

It's a sure fire way of losing eight kilos in 48 hours and having an entire plane load of people hate on you because a doctor takes 45 minutes to ensure it is safe that you enter the country!! Oh boy. Sad, but again, very true.

The home of the first test, Chennai, is a place that brings back many fond memories.

1. It smells
2. It's hot
3. It smells

It is so hot in Chennai that in an Australia A v India A game, I saw an elephant fielding at backward square leg.

I was so dehydrated and delusional, I spoke to the elephant and he called me a pie thrower. We had an argument that I'm pretty sure went unnoticed by the rest of the team.

Two overs later, I was involved in another altercation, this time with Indian batsman Virat Kohli. He was upset that we were bouncing him too much and that the umpires were favouring us. Yep, two local umpires, in Chennai, favouring the Australia A team, in 45 degree heat.

This was as likely to happen as an argument with an actual elephant at backward square.

So, I did what any dehydrated and mentally spent bowler would do, I bowled an intentional beam ball (hand to head without bouncing) at Virat Kohli and told him that there was an elephant on the field who was dressed up like a princess and that the elephant wanted his blood on the wicket. Sad, but again, very true.

You can't imagine what happens to your body and mind when you play in these types of conditions. It's like playing a game of cricket in a sauna or attempting to play a pull shot with your head in the oven.

This tour is the most physically demanding tour of any on the international circuit and one that Australian teams have generally struggled.

Our failures in India have come from our inability to play quality spin bowling. I don't think I am unravelling any secrets here.

Our domestic wickets over the past six years have been set-up for the quicks to do the damage, to ensure a result is achieved.

This has meant that any spinner with a glimmer of ability has been forced to bowl defensively when plying their craft in the domestic ranks, as they are getting the ball in over 60, when the seam is flatter than a Queensland toad who has been run over by a Ford ute with RM Williams stickers on the back panel and a big-arse antenna protruding from the front bonnet.

There are only negatives to this. Someone will have to clean toad guts from the side of the car and Australian batsmen don't get to face quality spinners on wickets that have a little assistance for the slow men.

When our spinners do get this chance, it takes them 40 overs to get out of the defensive mindset that they have become accustomed and by this time, it is too late.

For any young children who watched the FOX SPORTS coverage, please take note of Michael Clarke's footwork to spin bowling. He is as far forward as he can go, or he is as far back as he can go.

When he advances down the wicket, he is on his toes and isn't always doing it looking for a boundary. He is a smart player of spin bowling. No, he is the perfect player of spin bowling but how many did he score today? 100..

* If anyone comes across that Elephant, his name is Stumpy and he is a chirpy prat who got a giant head after being the face of the 2011 World Cup.

Storm half blinded in WCC: Orford

Melbourne Storm ... head into the World Club Challenge "half blinded" according to Matt Orford. Source: David Crosling / AAP

Former Melbourne playmaker Matt Orford admits Melbourne Storm may be walking into Saturday's (EDT) World Club Challenge (WCC) against Leeds "half blinded".

The 2008 Dally M Medallist skippered Manly to a rare WCC win in 2009, the Sea Eagles holding on to beat the Rhinos 28-20 to end England's five-year hold on the trophy.

Will Melbourne Storm bring the trophy home?

While Orford knows what it takes to win it, he conceded traveling to the Old Dart is a tough assignment.

"It is very hard to win," Orford told foxsports.com.au.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

"You go over there not knowing a lot about your opposition.

"It's not like over here where we dissect the teams that much that you know them inside out and you can try and stop what they are going to throw at you but you go over there sort of half blinded.

"They probably get to see all our games where we don't get to see theirs so they know how we play more than we do their game."

While Storm coach Craig Bellamy is upset that the scheduling of this year's game disrupts the Storm's NRL pre-season, the coach has vowed to pick his best possible team for the clash.

It will be the third time the two sides have done battle for the trophy, with Leeds winning the 2008 match and Melbourne going home with the title in 2010, before being stripped of the honour due to the salary cap scandal.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

Orford made his name as a halfback under the coaching of Bellamy and he believes the meticulous planning the Storm are famous for puts them in pole position to claim the match, despite the significant obstacles that need to be overcome.

"They are too experienced not to be (in perfect position to win the game)," Orford said.

"Craig (Bellamy) is at the top of the game when it comes to preparation – I don't think he'll leave any stone unturned and just be like they are in this competition with how professional they are, they'll do everything that is required of them to make sure they'll put the best blokes on the park to bring that Challenge Cup home."

Orford expects the Storm to be physically on par with Leeds thanks to a gruelling pre-season regime but adapting to the playing field and its conditions could pose problems.

"The in goals are really short so we trained with the exact field dimensions every training session so we got our kicking game right," he recalled.

"We had everything as close to their match game conditions as possible.

"Physically we were ready because we had already been training over in Australia.

"It was mostly getting used to the conditions and mentally preparing for the conditions we were going to play in.

"We played in sloppy mud and it was going to be a wet football game which was going to be a pretty boring grinding game which suited our game anyway."

The annual challenge match will be held in England for the 13th consecutive year but next year it is set to be held in Australia while in 2015 it could be enlarged to take in six teams.

Australia last hosted the challenge in 1994 when Wigan beat Brisbane at ANZ Stadium in Queensland and while the timing of the competition may still be an issue, with the NRL starting a month after Super League, Orford says hosting rights will shift the advantage back to the NRL.

"It will change this a bit," he said of the game being played on Australian soil.

"The refereeing interpretations are different so they'll find out its quicker in England because they don't let you wrestle so when an English team gets an Australian ref it might be a bigger 10 metres than what they are used to.

"There may be a few subtle things that will shake them up a bit and put them off their game."

Just when Rugby League fans thought the era of the corner post was over, Fox Sports has delivered the ultimate reason for its survival.

Friday night's annual Charity Shield battle between St George Illawarra and South Sydney marks the unofficial start to the 2013 NRL season, but the annual pre-season clash will also be remembered for being the first rugby league match with cameras installed in its corner posts.

Fox Sports latest camera innovation Cornerpost Cam will be unveiled for the first time on Friday night after being trialled with great success during a pre-season rugby trial between the Brumbies and an ACT representative team in Canberra earlier this month.

In an extraordinary weekend of innovation for Australia's leading sports broadcaster, Cornerpost Cam will make its debut on the night before Ref Cam makes its maiden appearance in the round two Super Rugby clash between Queensland Reds and New South Wales Waratahs in Brisbane.

Fox Sports chief executive, Patrick Delany, said the breakthrough innovations are aimed at bring fans closer to the game.

"Ref Cam and Cornerpost Cam produce very different but equally stunning vision," Delany said.

Watch Cornerpost Cam make its debut from 7.00pm (EDT) Friday on Fox Sports 3HD!

"They are about giving fans a new perspective, something they've never seen before, and bringing them closer to the sports they love.

"During the summer we rolled out FoxKopter and Helmet Cam and the impact on our Big Bash coverage from an entertainment perspective was really felt by cricket fans.

"We are looking at ways to open up an entirely new experience for fans of every sport and we are only at the tip of the iceberg."

Cornerpost Cam features a GoPro Hero 3 camera imbedded in the lower part of the corner post padding and captures stunning vision of flying wingers leaping over the tryline, or spectacular try-saving tackles by desperate defenders trying to protect their line.

The technology is non-obtrusive and is contained within the corner post padding, making it safe for impact by players or the ball.

Tassie snare crucial WA wickets

Paceman ... Ben Hilfenhaus helped decimate the WA batting line-up. Source: Daniel Wilkins / News Limited

Tasmania's bowlers chimed in with crucial late innings runs and then ripped the heart out of Western Australia's batting on the opening day of their do-or-die Sheffield Shield game at the WACA Ground.

With both teams needing an outright victory to remain in the hunt for a spot in next month's Shield final, Tasmania amassed a 211-run total then went on a bowling rampage to leave WA at 6-54 at stumps.

SHEF - WACA Ground

21 February 2013 - Day 1, Session 3

Western Australia 1st Innings

R. Duffield 4 8 1 0 50
S. Whiteman 6 15 1 0 40

WA captain Michael Hussey won the toss and elected to field first on a green looking WACA deck.

The move appeared to pay off well with Tasmania slumping to 8-138 just after lunch on the opening day, but the lower order did tremendously well to fight.

James Faulkner did well to steady things with 28 with Jason Krejza then adding 36, Ben Hilfenhaus 23 and Adam Maher a not out 14 to help Tasmania post 211.

WA still appeared on top heading into their second innings, but not for long with Hilfenhaus (2-21), Luke Butterworth (2-14), Maher (1-9) and Faulkner (1-8) bowling outstandingly well on what was still a green top.

Tasmania had WA 4-28 with Liam Davis gone for five, Marcus Harris for seven, Luke Towers for two and John Rogers for 14 before Hussey and the returning Mitch Marsh came together at the wicket.

The pair tried in vain to survive until stumps falling for consecutive deliveries. Hussey was caught by Bailey at fourth slip off Butterworth for three and then Marsh was trapped in front by Maher for 10 to be 6-44 .

At stumps they are 6-54 with Sam Whiteman not out on six and Ryan Duffield four.

Earlier, Tasmania's batsmen Alex Doolan (33), Ricky Ponting (28), George Bailey (18) and Jon Wells (16) all made starts but couldn't go on with it.

Tasmania was 3-68 at lunch, but lost both Ponting and Bailey soon after to be 5-86. That's where the lower innings revival kicked in, though, and the Tigers went from being 8-138 to making a competitive 211.

Teenage spinner Ashton Agar collected 3-47 for WA with the returning Duffield taking 3-61, Burt Cockley 2-47 and Michael Hogan 2-54.

Cheika: It's all about ourselves

It starts with us ... Cheika isn't worried by what the Reds have to offer. Source:News Limited

Queensland Reds coach Ewen McKenzie and New South Wales Waratahs counterpart Michael Cheika are predicting another typically physical battle when the two fierce foes meet in Brisbane on Saturday night.

The Reds completed the double over the Waratahs in 2012, their bonus-point victory in the final round securing the Australian conference and ensuring their bitter rivals ended a miserable season in the worst possible fashion.

But with new coach Michael Cheika at the helm and star recruit Israel Folau turning heads at fullback, another Reds thumping appears unlikely.

"I think that the interstate clash is something that all the rugby fans should be looking forward to," Cheika said on Fox Sports' Rugby HQ.

"And you're not going to win it unless you front up physically and try to lay a platform down for any type of attack you want to play.

"It's part of my psyche that we have to front up physically and challenge the opposition to see if we're up for the battle, and that's something we're going to have to do because we're going to have 40,000 people opposite us."

Disappointed with how his side performed at the tackle in their round one loss to the Brumbies, McKenzie said the Reds had spent much of the week focusing on the breakdown.

He also alluded to Cheika's selection of five-two bench and the prospect of another forward-dominated contest, something Super Rugby fans have come to expect from the two sides.

"The Brumbies were very good at that part of the game, the breakdown is always a big part of the first four or five rounds," McKenzie told Rugby HQ of last week's loss.

"You've got to get that right and understand what the referees are going to tolerate, we had no trouble in the trials. It certainly didn't work out last week so that's a credit to the Brumbies.

"It's an area that we've never been poor in so we've made some adjustments this week. It will feature heavily in the game as it's always a key part so we're looking forward to doing a bit better there.

"He's (Cheika) obviously picked a very big side, and that's reflected with a five-two bench as well. So that might give an indication of how he thinks the game will be played."

The usual pre-season optimism in Sydney, perpetuated this year by the addition of Folau, has again been a feature of the Waratahs build-up despite the absence of key playmaker Berrick Barnes.

But Cheika isn't promising anything, the Heineken Cup-winning coach admitting he was still getting to know the playing squad and that success could be some way off.

"The focus for us has been pretty much on ourselves," he said.

"I'm still getting to know the guys and this will be the first time I get to see them in competition where the pressure can change a lot.

"For us this season, we've really decided to put all the accent on what we're doing and hopefully we can cause enough trouble for the opposition that they have to worry about us.

"Obviously they've (Reds) got runs on the board; without being an admiration society they've been the conference winners for the last two years and they're going to be at home with a full house.

"We've just got to front up with plenty of courage and really care about the performance."

Harbhajan predicts India whitewash

Sweep ... Harbhajan Singh is in line to play his 100th Test against Australia. Source: Phil Hillyard / News Limited

India's fiery offspinner Harbhajan Singh says he has learnt what works and what doesn't in terms of on-field aggression as he prepares to reach his 100-Test milestone in the clash with Australia on Friday.

The "Turbanator'' - who played a leading role in the 2008 Monkeygate scandal in Sydney -- has been recalled for just his second Test in the past 12 months.

Harbhajan boasts a magnificent record against Australia of 90 wickets in 16 Tests.

And he's predicted a 4-0 sweep for the home side.

"Your question is such that I have mellowed down and all that,'' Harbhajan told a media conference on Thursday.

"With time you learn things. I have made a few mistakes early in my career due to my extra aggressions.

"Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't.

"Of course with time I have learned a lot and I'm looking forward to doing even better as a person.

"You might play this game for 15 years or so, but what sort of person you are matters the most. Everybody wants to be a better person than he was yesterday.''

Harbhajan was suspended for racially abusing Australia's Andrew Symonds during the Sydney Test of 2008 although the three-match ban was reduced to a fine for abuse on appeal.

Harbhajan's 99-Test career includes includes 32 scalps in three Tests in 2001.

"I can't keep on thinking about the same thing again and again and hoping I can repeat it,'' the 32-year-old said.

"That kind of thing happens only once in your life when everything clicks.''

While India didn't name a side on Thursday, it's expected Harbhajan will form a four-pronged spin attack with Ravi Ashwin, Pragyan Ojha and allrounder Ravindra Jadeja.

India are under pressure following their 2-1 series loss at home to England in December.

"I said we can beat Australia four-nil and why not? If you don't believe in yourself, who will?,'' he said.
Harbhajan said previous Australia sides had been packed with superstars as Matthew Hayden and Shane Warne.

"This is a new team. They have hardly played in India,'' he said.

"We know Australians come hard no matter what team they have got. We have just got be there and stick to our job.''

Harbhahan says it will be a great moment to become the 10th Indian to play 100 Tests and join the likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Rahul Dravid and the game's leading runscorer Sachin Tendulkar in the exclusive club.

Evidence ... Paralympian Oscar Pistorius arrives in court. Source:AP

Killing suspect Oscar Pistorius is a flight risk and should not be granted bail, South African police argued in court Wednesday.

Pistorius is charged with premeditated murder for the Valentine's Day shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp with a 9mm pistol.

Pistorius asserted in a court affidavit Tuesday that the shooting was accidental and he thought the model was an intruder in his home.

Police officer Hilton Botha alleged in the star athlete's bail hearing Wednesday that Pistorius illegally possessed .38-caliber ammunition in a safe in his bedroom. The policeman testified that Pistorius did not have a license for a .38-caliber weapon and consequently possession of that ammunition was illegal.

The detective said that all Pistorius would say after the shooting was "he thought it was a burglar.''

Botha also said a witness told police he heard gunshots, a woman screaming and then more shots on the night Steenkamp was gunned down.

However, Pistorius' defence team then went on the attack during cross-examination, which revealed the witness was 600m away.

Botha told the court he arrived at Pistorius's luxury home in Pretoria at 4.15am to find the athlete's girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, lying dead at the bottom of the stairs "wearing shorts and covered in towels".

In other evidence, Botha told the court that Pistorius had threatened a man at a race-track "over a girl" and said he would "f--- him up."

The investigating officer said the man was so scared by Pistorius's alleged threats, he consulted a lawyer.

In an additional revelation Wednesday, police said they found two boxes of testosterone and needles in the Pistorius' bedroom.

Pistorius' defense lawyer, Barry Roux, said the substance found in the bedroom was a "herbal remedy'' not a steroid and not a banned substance.

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel said police are not saying that Pistorius used the substance, simply that it was found in his bedroom.

Earlier, Nel told the court the prosecution team had a witness who had heard non-stop shouting coming from Pistorius's luxury home on the night Steenkamp was gunned down, between 2am and 3am.

Pistorius became the first Paralympian runner to compete at the Olympic Games in London last year.

Pistorius, 26, has insisted he shot the 29-year-old Steenkamp by mistake, fearing there was an intruder in his gated and guarded luxury complex in the capital, Pretoria.

NRL clubs unite against doping

NRL club bosses have pledged a united approach to anti-doping in the wake of the Australian Crime Commission investigation casting a shadow over the code.

At a meeting of club chief executives at Rugby League Central on Wednesday, all clubs pledged to work with the new NRL integrity unit in an across-the-board fight against drugs in the sport.

Manly chief executive David Perry said it was imperative clubs tackled the issue together.

"The objective today was to ensure that we are all working together as a whole game to understand the issue,'' Perry said.

"It is critical for the whole of the game.

"We have to remember that we have achieved some great results in the past with our testing and today was about making sure we keep up.

"All of the game has been impacted but we have to look at the good things.

"We are working with ASADA (Australian Sports Anti-Doping Agency) and now it is business as usual with ASADA.''

Manly was one of six clubs named in the ACC report - alongside Canberra, Newcastle, North Queensland, Penrith and Cronulla.

NRL chief executive Dave Smith said the league and each of the 16 clubs were close to finalising new measures to fight advancements in doping such as peptide hormone use.

"We want to ensure a drug free game and the clubs are strong in their support of that aim, NRL Chief Executive,'' Smith said.

"Their attitude today underlined how seriously they have focused on integrity as an issue but we need to be conscious of dealing with new substances and new threats.

"All sixteen clubs see themselves as playing a role with the NRL and they couldn't have been more supportive.

"Everyone regrets the focus on individual teams, but again, all sixteen clubs see themselves as being active in the way forward.

"We all accept the need to wait for ASADA to complete its investigations and we will work with them to achieve that.

"Our clubs are also used to working with ASADA on an ongoing basis and the relationship has always been a cooperative one.

"We have said all along that the overwhelming majority of our players and clubs do the right thing.''

However clubs remain disgruntled over the pall that has been cast over rugby league by the ACC report and Canberra boss Don Furner said the possibility of legal action had not been ruled out.

"It's not ideal (with the season about to start) ... it's not something we created but it is something we have to deal with,'' Furner said.

"We will reserve our decision (over legal action).''

The proposed pre-season Nines tournament was another hot topic at the meeting with club bosses seeking to find a way to fit it into scheduling without impacting upon the All Stars fixture and without placing increasing demands on players.

"One idea was to limit teams to one trial game so we can fit the Nines tournament in,'' Perry said.

King of Aussie surfing crowned

Legend ... Mark Richards named the most influential Australian surfer. Source: Gary Graham / News Limited

Mark Richards, the four-times world champion and inventor of the revolutionary twin-fin board design, has been named the most influential Australian surfer in history.

  • 10 Bob McTavish
  • 9 Mark Occhilupo
  • 8 Wayne 'Rabbit' Bartholomew
  • 7 Layne Beachley
  • 6 Tom Carroll
  • 5 Bernard 'Midget' Farrelly
  • 4 Michael Petersen
  • 3 Robert 'Nat' Young
  • 2 Simon Anderson
  • 1 Mark Richards.

The Novocastrian's distinctive swooping style, earning him the affectionate nickname of 'The Wounded Seagull,' helped make him a competitive machine in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

His two-fin board design was used worldwide, his professionalism was legendary, his popularity was universal and he was regarded as an unreservedly worthy recipient of the highest accolade at Surfing Australia's lavish awards night in Sydney.

On recieving the honour, Richards was typically laid back. ""holy s---, it's a long time since I won anything."

Surfing Australia's decision to rank its ten most important surfers, to mark the 50-year anniversary of the governing body, was fraught with danger and possible controversy.

But the elevation of Richards above all others was greeted by a standing ovation.

The list was put together as part of the sports' anniversary celebrations in Australia and was well received on the night.

The compilation is expected to provoke much debate with some notable omissions including five-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore, two-time world titleholder Mick Fanning and Australia's first ever world champion Phyllis O'Donnell.

Gilmore and Joel Parkinson, who won his maiden world crown in 2012, were named Surfers of the Year at the function on Sydney's waterfront prior to the announcement of the Top 10.

"To win this award as the sport celebrates it's 50th anniversary is extra special," said Parkinson who thwarted Kelly Slater's bid for a 12th world title in December.

"I am truly honored. I would have been happy with a box of chocolates. "

ASP Men's World Junior Champion Jack Freestone won the Rising Star Award and 10-time Molokai paddleboard champion Jamie Mitchell from the Gold Coast the Waterman of the Year Award.

Leader ... Jarryd Hayne will be a co-captain at the Eels this year. Source: Gregg Porteous / News Limited

Tim Mannah will be unveiled as Parramatta's captain later this week, with Jarryd Hayne and Reni Maitua to be co-captains for the 2013 NRL season.

The Eels have scheduled a media conference on Friday to announce the news Hayne Tweeted that the trio would head the club's new leadership group under coach Ricky Stuart on Wednesday night.

Former NSW prop Mannah replaces Nathan Hindmarsh as skipper after the former representative star retired at the end of last season.

Jarryd Hayne and Reni Maitua will complete remarkable career transformations when they are named Parramatta co-captains this week.

Eels coach Ricky Stuart has carefully considered his options to replace retired skipper Nathan Hindmarsh since joining the club last September.

With no obvious successor, Stuart spent the entire off-season surveying the candidates and has ignored his natural preference for a stand-alone skipper.

The co-captaincy model will involve Hayne and Maitua, while inspirational prop Tim Mannah is also expected to play a role.

While the rejuvenated Maitua has fought back from a two-year drug ban to clinch the honour, Hayne's appointment will be the major talking point among the blue and gold army.

An undoubted match-winner, the 25-year-old is a singular character who has confessed his dislike of training numerous times in the past.

But Stuart and Eels officials have enormous faith that the added responsibility will take Hayne's ownership of the team to another level.

They have also been in negotiations since early December to extend his contract for another four seasons - a deal that is expected to be finalised before the season kicks off.

Maitua, 30, had no captaincy aspirations when he made his NRL comeback less than two years ago. But his leadership and dealings with younger players have been impossible to ignore over the past two off-seasons.

The former Test lock was also a key figure in overhauling the team's attacking structure late last season, leading to a handful of wins that gave Parramatta a chance to avoid the wooden spoon.

Both players also boast the advantage of staying on the field for the full 80 minutes.

While he generally plays just over half a game, Mannah's passion during the past year's woes worked in his favour.

And the strength he displayed during the passing of his little brother, Jon, last month was also tremendous.

In the absence of Hayne and Maitua, he led the Eels against Wests Tigers last week and joined Stuart to explain the disappointing 41-4 defeat afterwards.

Stuart did not return calls on Tuesday night, but the announcement will be made on Friday ahead of this weekend's final trial against Penrith.

The news comes as Parramatta CEO Ken Edwards begins a search for a new major sponsor after current backer Pirtek decided to cease support beyond this year.

Edwards has valued the package at $1.5 million a season, but Pirtek was only willing to re-commit for $3 million over the next three years.

The company's departure will relieve tension after Pirtek boss Glenn Duncan fell out with six of the seven directors following his snap decision to quit the board in late 2011.

"At the end of the day, $1.5 million a season wasn't viable for us. It was a 50 per cent increase," Pirtek said. "There are no hard feelings."

RLIF extends shoulder-charge ban

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 19 Februari 2013 | 20.47

Ban backed ... The NRL's ban on shoulder charges has been endorsed by the game's governing body. Source: News Limited

Rugby league's international governing body has endorsed the NRL's ban on the shoulder charge by extending it across all competitions.

All rugby league matches - starting with this weekend's World Club Challenge between NRL premiers Melbourne and Super League champions Leeds - will now be played under the new rules prohibiting the shoulder charge.

Rugby League International Federation chairman Scott Carter said competitions already in progress - such as the Super League - will be allowed to separately determine if the rule is implemented immediately.

"Reviewing rules such as the shoulder charge is an important part of ensuring we have created the right environment for our players,'' Carter said in a statement.

"Player safety is a fundamental principle and the latest research and current trends show that the shoulder charge has the potential to create an unacceptable risk of injury for players.''

The ban has been met with a largely negative reaction by NRL players, who argued tougher penalties for contact with an opponent's head would have been a better response to a spate of ugly shoulder charges last year.

The matter came to a head last year when St George Illawarra utility Dean Young was flattened when hit by South Sydney's Greg Inglis, who was banned for three matches as a result.

Inglis' Rabbitohs teammate Sam Burgess - a keen exponent of the shoulder charge - said he wasn't in favour of the ban.

"If I'm honest I think it's a crap rule change, because everyone likes seeing it - it's on every highlight reel with all the big hits,'' Burgess told Triple M's The Rush Hour.

''You do have to change (your tackling technique) in a sense because the decisions to make a shoulder charge are split second, so you have to change your whole mindset defensively.

"I think we'll see a few penalties early on in the year.''

Sayers emerges as Ashes bolter

Chadd Sayers ... emerges as an Ashes bolter. Source:News Limited

NSW quicks Trent Copeland and Doug Bollinger claimed quick wickets as South Australia lost their early grip of the Sheffield Shield match in Adelaide.

The Redbacks bowled NSW out for 157 but in reply wobbled to 5-101 at stumps on Tuesday's opening day.

Copeland (3-22 from 14 overs) and Bollinger (2-32) triggered a South Australian collapse of five wickets for 14 runs.

Copeland grabbed the first three scalps and Bollinger then claimed victims in consecutive balls.

Bollinger's hat-trick attempt was a bouncer which cracked into the helmet of SA's Jake Brown, leaving the batsman dazed but not dismissed.

Earlier, SA's in-form paceman Chadd Sayers destroyed the Blues' batting line-up.

Sayers, the Shield's leading wicket-taker this season with 35 victims, claimed 5-54 from 20 overs including the initial four wickets, as NSW crashed to 4-33.

Sayers, who this season has played eight of his 10 first-class games, refuses to rate himself an outside chance for Australia's Ashes tour of England this winter.

"If you keep performing, then your name gets thrown up there. If that does happen, then I will grab it with both hands,'' Sayers said.

"I'm not thinking that far forward ... I will just keep performing for the Redbacks and you never know what happens.''

Sayers stands only 1.80 metres tall, or 5'9 in old-speak.

He's not overly quick, bowling around the 130-135kmph mark.

But he can swing a ball, mainly outswing. And he can jag it both ways off the pitch.

And Sayers has uncanny accuracy, operating with a simple mantra of making the batsman play at each ball.

"When you're asking a batsman to make a decision 100 per cent of the time, the odds are in your favour,'' he said.

"Not many people around Australia at the moment can play outswing bowling so if you can swing the ball, you're in the game.''

His pace partner Joe Mennie took 4-39 from 20 overs, with only Blues veteran Brad Haddin playing an innings of substance.

Haddin top-scored with 56 but opener David Dawson (26) and Copeland (26) were the only other batsmen to reach double figures.

Ref Cam ... The latest innovation in broadcast technology will be unveiled in Brisbane. Source:Fox Sports

Fox Sports' ground-breaking use of technology will continue this weekend when Australia's first "Ref Cam" is unveiled in the much-anticipated Queensland Reds-New South Wales Waratahs Super Rugby clash.

Following on from a KFC T20 Big Bash League season that featured FoxKopter, Helmet Cam and Zing Bails, Fox Sports will unveil "Ref Cam" as its latest piece of broadcast innovation.

Trialled in the Super Rugby pre-season, referee Chris Pollock has been given the okay to don the specifically-engineered camera - which transmits live vision via an earpiece camera - in Saturday night's clash at Suncorp Stadium.

One of the biggest matches on the Super Rugby calendar, Aussie fans will now find themselves a step closer to the always fiery Reds-Waratahs showdown.

"Rugby fans will be blown away by some of the angles this camera can produce," Head of Fox Sports Channels Gary Burns said. "You don't get any closer to the thick of the action than this.

David Pocock ... Ref Cam's extreme close-up. Source: Fox Sports

"The referee has the best view of anyone on the field, but now we are able to share that point-of-view with those watching at home and at Fox Sports venues.

Watch Ref Cam in action from 7.30pm (EDT) Saturday night on Fox Sports 2HD!

"The sound that it captures is great too. Through this camera you get a real appreciation for how tough it is out there, believe me."

Burns paid tribute to the Australian Rugby Union and SANZAR, who were both keen to see the latest in broadcast technology implemented in Super Rugby.

"But this wouldn't have been possible without the support of the ARU and SANZAR, so we really must thank them for seeing the benefits of the technology and working with us to give their fans the opportunity to see something very unique," Burns said.

"We also thank referee Chris Pollock for volunteering to wear the camera and allowing us to make it all happen in such a big game."

Fox Sports rugby reporter Sean Maloney will have a behind-the-scenes look at "Ref Cam" on Rugby HQ on February 28.

Ryobi Cup final hopes over for WA

So close ... Ricky Ponting fell just five runs short of a century in possibly his last one-day match. Source: Richard Jupe / News Limited

A maiden one-day domestic century from the returning Mitch Marsh was not enough for Western Australia to book a place in Saturday's Cup final, with Tasmania winning by 51 runs at the WACA Ground on Tuesday.

Having won their past two one-day cup games, WA needed to beat the Tigers with a bonus point to feature in the final at the MCG against Victoria.

WA skipper Michael Hussey won the toss and sent Tasmania into bat, so the Warriors would know exactly what score they would need off 40 overs to win with a bonus point.

But the fairytale looked decidedly unlikely when Ricky Ponting's 95 led the Tigers to 6-307 from their 50 overs.

The Warriors needed to score at 7.7 runs an over from the outset and in an attempt to get off to a flying start slumped to 5-78 with Liam Davis (28), Sam Whiteman (13), Hussey (four), John Rogers (12) and Tim Armstrong (one) all falling relatively cheaply.

However, the one positive for WA was having 21-year-old Marsh at the wicket in his first match since tearing his hamstring on November 17 last year.

Hilton Cartwright briefly joined up with Marsh before he fell for 20 from 24 balls.

But then debutant Ashton Turner came to the crease and he and Marsh, for a brief moment, gave the Warriors some hope of what was becoming a near impossible task.

The pair put on a partnership of 86 in just 75 balls before Turner fell for a swashbuckling 51 from 43, with six fours and two sixes.

Marsh continued on, though, and brought up his maiden one-day century for WA before falling for 104 to a brilliant direct-hit run out from Ponting, who was near the circle at backward point.

That ended Marsh's knock on 104 from 96 balls with six boundaries and five clean sixes.

With the bonus point win and place in the final gone, WA went on to be bowled out for 256 to lose the match and finish the one-day season on the bottom of the table.

Faulkner took 3-62 for Tasmania, with Evan Gulbis claiming 2-57, Timm van der Gugten 2-44, Ben Laughlin 1-37 and Harry Allanby 1-50 in a solid bowling display against some big hitting.

Earlier, Ponting made 95 for Tasmania from 105 balls with 13 boundaries after being dropped twice when on four and 35.

He was run out due to a bad call from Jordan Silk who went onto bat well himself making 66 from 66 balls and James Faulkner remained not out on 59 from 37.

Marsh was disappointed not to lead WA to the bonus point win to book a spot in the final, but was delighted to score his maiden one-day century after three months out injured.

''It was obviously good to come back like that and it was just a shame that we lost that way,'' Marsh said.

''We dropped a couple of chances and we learnt today that you can't really drop Ricky Ponting on four and 35. On a personal note, it's a good reward for my hard work and rehab though.''

Faulkner had a terrific day with the bat and ball for Tasmania, but was more impressed with the batting form of Ponting and Silk - and then with the whole bowling unit to get the win.

''Any time you start well with either the bat or ball I think it gives you confidence naturally, and it was good to be part of it,'' Faulkner said.

''But it was set up by Punter's 90-odd and I thought Jordan Silk batted really well in his second game.

''We obviously knew they were going to come hard and try to get the runs in the 40 overs, but for us it was just about concentrating on what we do well and we did that by creating opportunities in the first 20-odd overs. It was good to get a win today with a solid effort.''

Fighting words ... Roberto Mancini says his side can still retain their EPL title. Source: Clint Hughes / AAP

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini feels his side's FA Cup fifth-round win over Leeds United could help rejuvenate their Premier League title bid.

City produced a strong performance to beat Leeds 4-0, with Sergio Aguero scoring twice and further goals from Carlos Tevez and Yaya Toure securing a passage to the competition's last eight.

Mancini felt the result was reward for his team's concentration during a comfortable win over Leeds that the Italian hopes will also help inspire his players to break down Manchester United's 12-point advantage in the race for the league championship.

"It was really important to win this game and if you score two goals in the first 20 minutes it is clearly easier," he said.

"If he (Aguero) scores a lot of goals from now until the end, the championship is not finished."

Leeds manager Neil Warnock was not happy with City's second goal, an Aguero penalty awarded by referee Mark Clattenburg after he had adjudged Tom Lees to have fouled the Argentine striker in the box.

Contact between the two looked minimal, but Aguero stopped playing after Lees' arm made contact with his face.

Mancini, though, insisted he did not have a good view of the incident but that the result was the right one.

"It (the foul for the penalty) was difficult to see from the bench. I didn't see it," he said. "The game finished 4-0 and I don't think we gave them many chances to score.

"I think the result is correct. I don't know if the penalty was correct, I will see it again but I can't say at the moment."

Shanghai could report Drogba to FIFA

Controversy ... Didier Drogba (L) left Shanghai in acrimonious circumstances. Source: AAP

Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua will take its battle against star striker Didier Drogba's move to Turkish side Galatasaray to football's governing body FIFA this week, domestic reports said Monday.

The Ivory Coast striker left the club in acrimonious circumstances last month, with Shanghai saying he had breached his contract.

''We now have evidence which we believe will give Shenhua a 99 per cent chance of winning a lawsuit at FIFA,'' a lawyer acting for the club told the Sina web portal.

The anonymous source from ''Shenhua's legal team'' said papers would be submitted to the sport's governing body on Wednesday.

The report said Shenhua will provide evidence that Drogba breached his contract and that Galatasaray had violated FIFA rules by luring a player away from his current club.

Shenhua declined to comment when contacted by AFP.

Chinese media previously reported Drogba had asked FIFA to nullify his contract after the club defaulted on payments following a shareholder dispute dating back to September.

Drogba came off the bench to score five minutes into his Galatasaray debut on Friday, a 2-1 victory over the Turkish league's bottom club Akhisar.

The striker signed an 18-month, 10 million euros ($A13.06 million) deal with the Istanbul side, who are due to play German side Schalke 04 on Wednesday in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Drogba -- a Champions League winner with English Premier League side Chelsea last season -- had signed a two-and-a-half year deal with Shanghai in June last year on a reported salary of $US300,000 ($A292,870) a week.

Drogba's exit from Shanghai followed that of former Chelsea teammate French striker Nicolas Anelka, who joined Italian giants Juventus on loan.

Aussies outclassed by India A

Australia showed some signs of improvement with the bat but were still comprehensively outplayed by India A in their three-day tour match which ended in a draw just four days out from the first Test.

Australia resumed in their first innings on 4-131 on Monday in reply to India A's 451 and were skittled for 235 at Chennai's Guru Nanak College Ground.

The home side's spinners Rakesh Dhurv (5-51) and Jajaj Saxena (4-61) claimed nine wickets between them in Australia's first innings.

Trailing by 216, Australia were forced to bat again as India A skipper Gautam Gambhir enforced the follow-on.
The Shane Watson-led tourists reached 3-195 at stumps.

Watson top-scored in Australia's first innings with 84 and the Test vice-captain was prominent again in the second dig, hitting 60 from 63 deliveries.

Watson and Ed Cowan (53) added 104 for the first wicket on Monday - their second century partnership of the match.

Phil Hughes (19) was bowled by Dhurv in the final over before tea.

Usman Khawaja finished on 30 not out with Matthew Wade on 19.

Skipper Michael Clarke (hamstring) and David Warner (thumb) were rested from the three-day game but have been training well.

"Davey has been hitting (balls in the nets) in the last couple of days so I think he'll be alright," Khawaja told his post-match media conference.

Khawaja said simply playing a first-class game in Indian conditions was a step forward for Clarke's men.

"Their spinners bowled very well. They used the conditions brilliantly and they put a lot of pressure on us," Khawaja said.

"You can bat in the nets as much as you want but it's not the same.

"The players took a lot out of that.

"That's why in the second innings you saw us bat so well. Watto and Eddie really set it up and we batted pretty well throughout the second innings.

"It's just nice to be out in the middle and getting some game time and putting ourselves under a bit of pressure."

Khawaja says pace remains a key weapon for Australia.

While spinners Nathan Lyon, Xavier Doherty and Ashton Agar claimed eight India A wickets, all three conceded centuries and couldn't match the tight bowling of pacemen Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc and Moises Henriques.

"Pete Siddle bowled lovely in this game (1-40 off 18)," Khawaja added.

"He really hit the deck hard and got in their faces and did what he does best.

"Pace can be as effective as spin out here."

Agar, 19, will return home on Tuesday to resume with Western Australia.

Questions raised over Aust bowling

Australia's bowling has raised a number of questions ahead of their first Test. Source: Tony McDonough / AAP

Australia's selectors were hoping their three-day game against India A would answer some questions about their bowling attack, rather than raise them.

The tourists' strategy seemed clear enough.

New-ball partners Peter Siddle and Mitchell Starc were named to play in the full-strength squad's only tour match before the first Test on February 22.

Seam-bowling allrounder Moises Henriques was also picked after taking 4-12 in the two-day game against the India Board XI.

And the team's regular spinner Nathan Lyon was joined by two-Test player Xavier Doherty and 19-year-old Ashton Agar in a three-man bowl-off for a possible two spin spots for the first Test.

However, while the spinners did claim eight wickets between them during the weekend, India A were allowed to pile on 451 runs on a flat batting track.

Siddle, Starc and Henriques all bowled tightly but took only two wickets between them.

The three spinners all conceded centuries, bowling more overs but less maidens than the quicks.

Australia's slow bowlers were unable to maintain pressure, something which will be even more crucial in the tense atmosphere of Friday's opening to the four-Test series at Chennai's Chidambaram Stadium.

It will be hot and humid and any loose bowling will be seized upon by India's batsmen.

Agar claimed 3-107 off 20 overs, removing three tailenders late in innings.

Doherty's determination to push the ball through and bang it hard into the wicket to get turn out of the spin-friendly pitches could count in his favour for selection alongside Lyon.

Any variation to the combination of Siddle, Starc and Henriques plus two spinners would be a risk, but the bowlers in general haven't excelled apart from Henriques taking 4-12 against the India Board XI.

Doherty finished with 3-108 from 24 overs against India A, having taken three of the first four wickets to fall.

Playing Agar ahead of Doherty would be a risk, but playing Doherty - whose Shield average of 80.00 this season doesn't inspire confidence - would also be a gamble alongside Lyon.

Australia's latest plan might involve three quicks plus Henriques and Lyon.

Skipper Michael Clarke has indicated he plans to bowl his left-arm spin and also throw the ball to occasional leggie David Warner in Chennai.

'Heart don't need Neill apology'

Sorry ... John Aloisi says Melbourne Heart will move on. Source: Salpigtidis George / News Limited

Melbourne Heart coach John Aloisi says he didn't need to hear Lucas Neill apologise for walking away from the club to join Sydney FC.

Instead, Neill's former Socceroos teammate said Neill must have felt sorry for the way he treated the club and it was now time to move on as the two clubs meet in Melbourne next weekend.

The Socceroos captain was heavily linked to the Heart before deciding to join his hometown club at the last minute, saying money had nothing to do with the decision.

Speaking on Fox Sports' Shootout, Aloisi said Neill must have felt he owed the Heart an explanation.

"I don't need an apology from anyone, it's up to the person themselves," he said.

"Obviously, he feels bad about something he said to us and I'm not going to get into it.

"All I can say is, at certain times, it's the way you conduct yourself."

Neill had been released by his UAE club, Al Wasl, a fortnight ago and trained with the Sky Blues for the first time on Sunday.

Instead of having Neill to combat the likes of Alessandro Del Piero and Joel Griffiths, Aloisi will have to plan how to shut the Socceroos captain down.

However, the on-field benefit wasn't the only reason the Heart wanted Neill, said the coach.

"We would have loved to have had Lucas on football terms," he said.

"He's a great footballer, he's been a great footballer for the national team, he's had a good career and he would have helped us, not only on the pitch, but off the pitch with the young boys.

"That's why we tried to get Lucas to our club.

"In the discussions we had, Lucas liked the way we play football, what we were trying to do at the club and he seemed very interested."

During his press conference, Neill said he was sorry about the misunderstanding.

"To the Melbourne Heart board and to Johnny Aloisi and Hayden (Foxe), I apologise if I gave too much of an indication that I was heading down to Melbourne and I wish them all the best," Neill said.

"There was never a case of leveraging one club against the other but when the opportunity became very real to join Sydney it was a difficult decision, but an easy one from a family point of view of being born in Sydney and raised in Sydney.

"As far as being gazumped at the last minute, there was never a question of money," Neill said after training with his new teammates for the first time.

"I think it's well-documented that Melbourne's offer was a hundred (thousand dollars) and I signed for seventy (thousand dollars), so I think we leave it at that."

Aussies collapse late on day two

Shane Watson ... was a rare shining light for Australia on day two. Source: Andres Leighton / AP

Australia have been totally outplayed in their only first-class warm-up match before next Friday's first Test after conceding 451 to India A on day two of their three-day game in Chennai.

The tourists reached 4-131 at stumps on Sunday in reply, failing to build on a century opening stand led by Shane Watson's fine knock of 84.

Australia lost 4-11 after Watson had added 116 with Ed Cowan (40) for the first wicket.

Left-arm spinner Rakesh Dhurv claimed the key wickets of Cowan lbw and Watson caught-behind, although both batsmen looked surprised to be given out.

Cowan was first to go and Phil Hughes (one) followed in the next over as the left-hander was stumped to offspinner Jalaj Saxena's bowling.

Watson, who belted 13 fours and one six from 87 deliveries, shook his head after his departure at 3-127.

Eight balls later there was no doubt about the dismissal of Usman Khawaja who played back and was bowled by Saxena for one.

Matthew Wade (three) and Moises Henriques (zero) are at the crease.

While Watson's 84 may lead to further calls for the vice-captain to be shifted from No.4 back to No.1 in the Test side, selectors are likely to stick with the David Warner/Cowan pairing.

Warner is recovering from a fractured thumb but was able to complete a batting session in the nets on Sunday as he attempts to prove his fitness for Friday's first Test.

Australia's spinners Xavier Doherty (3-108), Ashton Agar (3-107) and Nathan Lyon (2-113) claimed eight wickets between them in India A's innings, but all conceded centuries on a turning pitch in a performance that is a hardly a boost to Australia's confidence.

No.4 Manoj Tiwary made 129, joining ex-Test opener Gautam Gambhir (112) as a century-maker in the match after Gambhir dominated the first day of play.
